Technical Research Coordinator

DIGITS Digital Health Data Standards Initiative

Position Overview

The Division of Digital Psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is seeking a full-time Technical Research Coordinator for DIGITS (DIGital health Interoperability Technology Standards), a newly funded, four-year NIH R01 initiative (2026-2030) creating a consensus-driven, open standard for smartphone and wearable sensor data in mental health research and care.

In partnership with the American Psychiatric Association, Stanford, and engaged industry stakeholders (e.g., Google/Fitbit, Apple, Verily, Samsung, Oura), DIGITS will convene a multidisciplinary consortium, develop and iteratively refine the standard through structured community review, and validate it in a multi-site clinical study spanning wearable devices (Apple Watch, Oura Ring, Whoop, Fitbit) and smartphone platforms. Technical infrastructure builds on our open-source mindLAMP platform and its Cortex data analysis framework.

This is a research coordinator role with a meaningful technical component. We are looking for a well-organized coordinator who is comfortable working hands-on with data and code, supported by our in-house engineering team and collaborators at Stanford. The Technical Research Coordinator will work directly with Dr. Torous and project leadership and interact with leading academic, clinical, industry, and regulatory stakeholders in digital health.

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage wearable device logistics for the multi-device calibration and validation study, ensuring alignment with IRB documentation
  • Support tools for standardized data ingestion, metadata extraction, and quality validation, working with our engineering team and Stanford collaborators on integration with the Cortex software framework
  • Help maintain the project's GitHub-based dissemination infrastructure and documentation so research teams and device manufacturers can adopt the standard
  • Monitor incoming study data for quality and completeness, flagging and troubleshooting issues across devices and data formats
  • Support structured community review efforts, including modified Delphi processes, and help coordinate APA-hosted workshops, summits, and stakeholder review meetings
  • Assist with technical documentation and study reporting

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific, technical, or health-related field
  • Experience coordinating research studies or comparable organizational experience
  • Technical proficiency, including comfort with Python or a similar scripting language, working with data files and APIs, and using Git/GitHub
  • Exceptional organizational skills and strong written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work independently and manage parallel workstreams in a fast-paced translational research environment

Preferred Experience

  • Digital phenotyping, passive sensing, wearable, or mHealth sensor data
  • Familiarity with health data standards and interoperability (e.g., FHIR, Open mHealth, IEEE)
  • Multi-site, consortium-based, or open-source community projects
  • Experience with regulatory or standards documentation in digital health

Commitment and Compensation

  • Full-time position based at BIDMC in Boston, MA
  • One-year initial appointment, with potential for annual renewal based on performance and funding through the grant period (March 2030)
  • Flexible start date, with a strong preference for Fall 2026; the project is now underway and an early start is highly valued

About the Division

The Division of Digital Psychiatry advances mental health care through smartphone-based digital phenotyping, digital therapeutics, AI safety evaluation, digital literacy initiatives, and technology-enhanced clinical programs, including the Digital Clinic model for depression and anxiety. The Division's work has informed Congress, the FDA, the UK MHRA, the WHO, and the American Psychiatric Association.
