Discussing AI at NAMI NJ

Our team members Christine Shi and Mason Granof presented at the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) New Jersey chapter conference to provide their membership with up to date information on the status of Artificial Intelligence in mental healthcare.

The presentation provoked a lively discussion among membership, who expressed a mix of both optimism and concern about the technology. Some attendees describes particular concern that sycophantic AI could accelerate delusional and unreal thinking, while others pointed to the possibilities in helping manage executive dysfunction for individuals with developmental disabilities and SMI. Our presenters engaged with both sides of the debate, and explained how our ongoing efforts to test AI models in mental health contexts (mindbench.ai) will serve to help consumers understand this evolving environment.

This work comes out of an ongoing collaboration with NAMI, a leading organization in the mental health field that brings together clinicians, family members, and individuals with lived experience. This collaboration has enabled us to center those with lived experience in the development of MindBench, and we continue to gain valuable insights into how the broader field is thinking about Artificial Intelligence with every conference we attend.
