MindApps adds AI chatbot to simplify finding trusted health apps

Finding the right mental health app can be surprisingly difficult. With hundreds of options, big marketing claims, and little transparency around privacy or evidence, it's hard to know which app is worth downloading. Mental health apps are supposed to reduce barriers to care and complement traditional therapeutic approaches, but the sheer number of options makes it hard to find the right tool.

MindApps (the M-Health Index and Navigation Database) solves this problem by doing all the background research for users. Built by the Division of Digital Psychiatry, MindApps independently evaluates mental health apps using more than 100 objective criteria. Our team reviewed and aggregated all app information from privacy policies, research studies, developer websites, and other public sources into one free, searchable database that is regularly updated as apps evolve.

Rather than recommending a single "best" app, MindApps puts that information in the users' hands. Users can search and filter the database based on the criteria that matter most to them, whether that's strong privacy protections, research evidence, cost, symptom tracking, breathing exercises, or dozens of other features.

Now, we've made that process even easier with the new MindApps chatbot. Instead of scrolling through filters, users can simply describe what they're looking for in their own words, and our chatbot will filter the database to their described needs.

A user might say:
• "I'm looking for a free app to help me remember my medications."
• "I need an app to track my migraines, but I don't want it to share my data."
• “I want an anxiety attack app that is data-backed.”

The MindApps chatbot takes what a user is looking for and filters the database to just the apps that match the requested criteria. Behind the scenes, it uses the same independently collected information that powers the MindApp database, so recommendations remain based on transparent evaluations rather than advertising, popularity, or paid promotions.

Our update makes finding trustworthy information even faster and easier. We hope this update lowers barriers for patients, caregivers, and clinicians to find helpful digital health tools.
